Now that You've Made a Movie, What are You Going to Do with It?

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Haven’t made a feature yet (We just finished our first short film), but over the last year, I’ve come to realize that you can have the best movie in the world, but if you don’t have a plan to distribute it- you have the best home movie in the world because after all, isn’t that the idea of making a film: for people to actually see it?

And just as an aside, anytime somebody wants you to work on an independent film  (usually in this case for free) and they tell you that once they finish the film it will play in theatres– not to be mean, but they probably don’t know sh*t about how the film industry works.

On that note, Stacey Parks from Film Specific is offering free to Film Specific subscribers a 4 week online distribution course starting August 12th (I think it is like $20 a month to subscribe– and with the subscription you get access to loads of info on distribution– but even if you aren’t a member– she has a lot of really good free info).

Film Specific is a great resource on distribution, and Stacey is an expert on film distribution with over 13 years in the industry, so check out her Intro to Film Distribution: Dissecting Distribution now. . .  before you start making that next great american film.

I recently joined Film Specific (a site with lots of great information on film distribution– now I just need to get around to reading and then using it).  It is ran by Stacey Parks who used to work in film distribution.  Here is her free film distribution crash course.
