Small Business Owners: Got Web Video?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Web video isn’t only about robot vacuuming riding cats or film trailers anymore.

We are still in the early stages of this shift from static text and graphics to a more dynamic, visually compelling medium, but we are approaching a tipping point. Video is no longer an afterthought or an add-on for Web-savvy businesses — but the primary content featured on their Web sites.

Mediapost.com suggests that the future is closer than you think.  When:

The Solutions Research Group predicts that total hours spent with video-based entertainment will average eight hours per day by early 2013 — the equivalent of an entire night’s sleep — and a majority of those hours will belong to online video.

Can you afford to not have web video for your business?

Public Relations Tips for Sarah Palin and You

Friday, November 14th, 2008

I am soooooooooo happy the elections are over.  Saying that, regardless of your opinion about the election, we can all agree that we can learn a lot from watching others in action.  The 60 Second Marketer has tips for you (and Sarah) on public relations, including:

Learn to Block and Bridge: The first thing most PR people teach their clients is how to block and bridge. When you get a question that you a) don’t want to answer or b) can’t answer, you block and bridge. The most common version of this is to say, “That’s a great question and one that we’re working on solving right now (the block), but we believe that most American’s are more concerned with the economy which is something we’re concerned about, too (the bridge).”

Read the rest here

I can’t remember where I heard it before, but somebody (smarter than me) said, you are not supposed to answer the question they ask you but the question you wanted them to ask you.

Now that You've Made a Movie, What are You Going to Do with It?

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Haven’t made a feature yet (We just finished our first short film), but over the last year, I’ve come to realize that you can have the best movie in the world, but if you don’t have a plan to distribute it- you have the best home movie in the world because after all, isn’t that the idea of making a film: for people to actually see it?

And just as an aside, anytime somebody wants you to work on an independent film  (usually in this case for free) and they tell you that once they finish the film it will play in theatres– not to be mean, but they probably don’t know sh*t about how the film industry works.

On that note, Stacey Parks from Film Specific is offering free to Film Specific subscribers a 4 week online distribution course starting August 12th (I think it is like $20 a month to subscribe– and with the subscription you get access to loads of info on distribution– but even if you aren’t a member– she has a lot of really good free info).

Film Specific is a great resource on distribution, and Stacey is an expert on film distribution with over 13 years in the industry, so check out her Intro to Film Distribution: Dissecting Distribution now. . .  before you start making that next great american film.
