Pick Your Brain- Red's Jim Jannard Reveals New Red Scarlet and Epic Specs

Friday, November 14th, 2008

With the goal to make “Obsolescence Obsolete,” Red unveils pictures and specs for their new DMSC system (Digital Stills and Motion Camera or is it Digital Motion and Stills Camera?).

We promised that we would make “Obsolescence Obsolete”. In our minds, when we released the RED ONE, we imagined that we would offer an upgrade for the RED ONE sensor as technology and innovation improved.

Select a Scarlet or EPIC “brain” and configure your body to anything you want.

Scarlet is a Professional “brain”. EPIC is a Master Professional “brain”.

See the pictures and specs at the reduser.net forums here.  There is also a mention of shooting in 3D.

Doesn't anybody have something bad to say about the Red One?

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

So far, I’ve only heard glowing reviews about the Red One, about how it outperforms more expensive HD and Film cameras. Until now. From Rian Johnson, the director of Brick (a pretty damn good flick) and The Brothers Bloom,

The RED camera does not do what it claims. Which is not to say it’s a bad product, or that it doesn’t have its place – in terms of quality it’s a good alternative to things like Varicam and HDV. But it does not hold a candle to regularly used high-end HD, let alone film. And we’re going to tell you why.

More here. Via CHUD.COM by way of Cinematographer.com

Admittedly, I don’t really care, but it does make for good conversation (among film making nerds like myself). Whether the Red One outperforms the F23 or Genesis is a good problem to have. We have a saying: give Steven Spielberg your grandma’s old VHS camera, and he is going to tell a good story (Unless it happens to be Indiana Jones IV).

Looks like RED is on track to release the Red Scarlet in April of 2009– previously, I had only heard the release date was 2009 (via omega 13 productions).  Also another new image of it here.  Oooooh tech porn :-)

Article from Videography on the Red One Workflow for Editors

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Following up on my post last week on the Red One, I found this article on the Editing Workflow for the Red One.

It also goes into some high profile projects that have been shot on the Red One:

RED ONE is proving itself out in the field, providing VFX shots on the action film Wanted and the sci-fi fantasy Jumper, as well as 100 percent of the acquisition on Steven Soderbergh’s Guerrilla, The Argentine and The Informant. In addition, the directing team that delivered the digitally-shot Crank is shooting their upcoming Game as an all-RED feature film production. Not to mention many lower-profile productions ranging from commercials and music videos to indie film projects.

Article on Shooting Splintered on the Red One camera

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

So far I don’t think that any camera has really offered an alternative to shooting film in terms of ease of use, quality and at a reasonable price point… up until now.

Read the article here from HD Magazine

Also, here is an streaming interview with Ted Schilowitz, a developer for Red from Meet the Experts on the Pixel Heads Network (a great resource by the way).  He also talks about the Red Epic and Red Scarlet, two new cameras due out in 2009.  Come hell or high water, I am getting a Scarlet.

In related news, Ryan Todd, a sacramento filmmaker just shot Sensored on the Red One (produced by KeJo productions a sacramento production company– glad to see people putting Sac on the map).  Looks pretty cool.
