A Warning from Filmmaker Alex Ferrari on Using the Red Camera

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Update: Greetings visitors from myr3d.com.  Please take a look around the site and subscribe if you see anything that interests you.

Below is a message from filmmaker Alex Ferrari from numbrobot.com on using the Red Camera.  And see some of the amazing looking images he is getting with the Red and color correction:

I was just at RED headquarters yesterday. As I sit here wearing my RED camera T-shirt I just purchased I have to confess that I have drunk the RED camera Kool-Aid. My company post/vfx company Numb Robot (www.numbrobot.com) has gone full force towards the RED camera workflow and as of today has done over 15 feature, shorts, and television project on the RED. A word of warning to ALL indie filmmakers thinking of using the RED camera, it is not a toy! It’s not a Panasonic DVX or HVX! It is a real motion picture camera and it should be respected as such. You can’t pull it out of the box and shoot with it. You need to have professionals around you who understand it’s workflow and a DP who knows how to shoot it. Just because you might have an experienced editor, post supervisor or DP on your team, it does not mean that they know what to do with the RED. I have seen countless filmmakers come through my doors crying because of all the $$$ they lost in post or on prodution because they didn’t have experienced RED people with them. I write this not to scare you but to warn you. I am an indie filmmaker as well and know the feeling of having your baby hurt by inexperienced people.

With the goal to make “Obsolescence Obsolete,” Red unveils pictures and specs for their new DMSC system (Digital Stills and Motion Camera or is it Digital Motion and Stills Camera?).

We promised that we would make “Obsolescence Obsolete”. In our minds, when we released the RED ONE, we imagined that we would offer an upgrade for the RED ONE sensor as technology and innovation improved.

New New Scarlet News

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Sounds like these two cameras are probably the reason that Red went back to the drawing board with Scarlet.  Any day now, Red will release the specs for the new Scarlet.  Fresh DV has fun and informs with Red Announces Announce Date of Announcement.

Update: A review of the D90s video capability (suprisingly, for all the hype, it doesn’t exactly pass with flying colors).

11/14/08 Update: Red reveals specs!
